Getting Started
Does Indiana require a license or training to own a gun?
No, Indiana does not require a license or any formal training to purchase or own a firearm.
We understand that this can sound surprising — or even concerning — to many people. The idea that there’s no mandatory training can feel risky at first. But here’s the reality: Indiana has always trusted its citizens with this responsibility. For generations, gun ownership in Indiana has been treated as a fundamental right paired with personal accountability.
That freedom puts the responsibility squarely on the gun owner to seek out quality training and develop safe, responsible habits. No one else is going to do it for you — and that’s exactly why you’re here reading this.
If you want to be a safe and confident gun owner (not just a gun owner), we’ve made it easy to take that first step. We highly recommend starting with our Responsible Gun Ownership course. It’s offered both virtually and in-person, and it covers Indiana laws, safe storage, carry methods, and the fundamentals every owner should know.

I have never touched a firearm. Is FTS really for me?
Yes. FTS stands for First Time Shooter, and we built the entire experience around people who feel intimidated by traditional gun culture. We work one-on-one and in small groups, we move at your pace, and there are no dumb questions. If you have been putting off learning because your hands get sweaty just thinking about touching a firearm, you're at the right place.
Which class should I take first?
Our classroom courses (no live fire) can be taken in any order, but here’s the most common path for beginners:
Start with Responsible Gun Ownership — Best foundation for safety rules, storage, and Indiana laws.
Next: Introduction to Firearms — Learn how guns work and how to choose the right one.
Then: Introduction to Shooting Fundamentals — Laser training to build good habits (strongly recommended before live fire).
Scan, Spray, and Away can be taken anytime for situational awareness and less-lethal options.
Courses
What should I wear to a range class?
Closed-toe shoes, a crew-neck shirt (no scoop or V-neck so hot brass cannot drop down it), long pants, and a hat with a brim. Avoid loose or open jewelry and bring eye and ear protection if you have them. We provide protection if you do not.
Do I need to bring my own gun?
No. In fact, we encourage you to take the classes before you purchase your first firearm. FTS provides the firearm, eye and ear protection, and a starter amount of ammunition for your first live-fire classes. If you already own a handgun and want to train with it, bring it (and any holster you carry with). Once you are ready to purchase, we will help you find one that fits your needs.
Where are FTS classes held?
Classroom-based classes are taught at COhatch Carmel, a welcoming co-working space. Live-fire range sessions are conducted at Atlanta Conservation Club. We serve Indianapolis and surrounding northside Indiana communities.
Billing
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
Payment is due in full at the time of registration and all payments are non-refundable.
But I get it — life happens. If you need to reschedule, please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer the spot to someone else. You may apply your tuition as a credit toward another class of equal value, as long as the new class is scheduled within one (1) year from the original payment date.
Classes are held rain or shine, so please come prepared for whatever weather Indiana decides to deliver.
FTS Firearm Training reserves the right to cancel or reschedule a class due to extreme weather or other extenuating circumstances. If we cancel, you will receive a full refund or the option to apply your tuition as a credit (valid for one year).
For any unusual situations, just contact us — we’re happy to work with you and figure out the best solution.
